Aims

This unit will introduce you to the values that underpin strengths-based nursing where you will learn to use critical thinking, self-awareness, reflection, and mindfulness. These skills will assist you to develop resilience as a nurse and foster resilience in people in your care.

 

Unit Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this Unit should be able to:

Describe the framework of strengths-based nursing and models of reflection (NMBA criteria 1.2, 1.3, 2.3, 2.4 and 3.3)

Review strategies that empower individuals to take an active role in health maintenance and self-care (NMBA criteria 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.7, 3.2 and 4.3)

Explain how communication (both written and verbal) can facilitate a collaborative partnership between the nurse, the patient and the healthcare team (NMBA criteria 1.6, 2.2, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8)

Describe health promotion models (NMBA criteria 1.1, 1.3, 2.3, 2.4, and 7.3)

Describe contemporary health care issue in consideration of the determinants of health, health promotion and healthy communities (NMBA criteria 1.3, 1.4, 2.4 and 2.7)

Identify the role of the nurse in primary care and health promotion (NMBA criteria 1.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 3.6, 3.7 and 7.3)

Minimum requirements to pass this Unit

To pass this unit, you must:

a) achieve an overall mark for the unit of 50% or more. Conceded passes are not recognised by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council therefore conceded passes will not be granted.

b) tutorials have an 80% attendance requirement as per the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council.

Examinations

If the unit you are enrolled in has an official examination, you will be expected to be available for the entire examination period including any Special Exam period.

There is no examination in this unit.

Submission Requirements

Assignments and other assessments are generally submitted online through the Canvas assessment submission system which integrates with the Turnitin plagiarism checking service.

Please ensure you keep a copy of all assessments that are submitted.

In cases where a hard copy submission is required an Assessment Cover Sheet must be submitted with your assignment. The standard Assessment Cover Sheet is available from the Current Students web site (see Part C).

Extensions and Late Submission

Late Submissions - Unless an extension has been approved, late submissions will result in a penalty. You will be penalised 10% of your achieved mark for each working day the task is late, up to a maximum of 5 working days. After 5 working days, a zero result will be recorded.
