CPCCBC4001 Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 1 and 10 buildings
Assessment information |
Student Toolbox Additional information to support you in completing training and assessment for units of competency from the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package is provided in the Student Toolbox. If you haven't read through the Toolbox lately, take a few moments to review it now. |
|
Assessment details This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to access, interpret and apply relevant building codes and standards applicable to the National Construction Code (NCC) Classes 1 and 10 buildings, to a maximum of two storeys. It includes knowledge of the structure of the NCC, as well as the ability to access relevant information from the code as applicable to various building projects. It applies to builders, site managers and related construction industry professionals responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and standards related to residential construction projects. This unit of competency is suitable for those using specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and using their own Judgement to deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable problems. Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of CPCCWHS1001Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. Licensing, regulatory or registration requirements apply to this unit of competency in some jurisdictions. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements. Assessment for this unit comprises: a knowledge test an evidence collection template one project. An Evidence Collection Template and Fire Protection Project Template are provided in this Workbook. You should read through all of these documents before you get started and ensure that you are clear on what you need to do. Speak to your trainer, assessor or workplace supervisor if you have any questions. |
|
Co-assessment In some cases, this unit will be assessed alongside other units from the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. Your assessor will advise you if co-assessment is right for you and will talk to you about how this will take place. Keep in mind that, regardless of how and when assessment takes place, the skills and knowledge you are required to demonstrate for this unit don't change. |
|
Am i ready? Use this section to check that you are ready to proceed with assessment. You should also use it to record important dates. Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this unit. Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement. |

Task requirements Knowledge test In this task, you will answer a range of questions about structural principles relevant to Classes 1 and 10 buildings, to a maximum of two storeys and the application of the NCC. This is an open book test that can be completed in the classroom, online, in the workplace or your assessor may set it as a homework activity. Evidence collection template In this task, you will demonstrate your skills and knowledge in accessing, interpreting and applying the relevant building codes and standards to a building project. You will do this by reviewing the plans, specs and drawings for a Class 1 or 10 building (that your assessor will provide) and: identify the type of construction identify the use of the building identify the class of building using NCC classifications identify the relevant building and construction codes identify the relevant Australian Standards identify the relevant NCC Performance Requirements in relation to the design and construction of the building identify the NCC and other legislative requirements for passive fire control elements in the building identify the NCC and other legislative requirements for active fire control elements in the building determine the level of fire resistance required for the construction of the building develop criteria that you will use to ensure that the construction methods for the project will comply with the NCC Performance Requirements that you identify identify and document any construction methods that don't conform to the NCC Performance Requirements propose a range of Performance Solutions for those non-conformances you identify discuss your proposed Performance Solutions with designers and/or building and construction professionals apply Assessment Methods to determine whether a Performance Solution or a DTS Solution is more suitable to the non-conformance you identified meet the evidence of suitability requirements for the building materials and products required for the projects as stated in the NCC complete the relevant documentation for the projects to meet the NCC requirements.
In Part 5 of your template you are asked to discuss a Performance Solution with a design or building and construction professional. This discussion may be in person, by phone, using video conferencing or in writing. If your assessor does not take part in or observe this discussion, then you should submit a recording or written record of your discussion including copies of all correspondence for your assessor to review. You will find more information about this in the template but keep in mind that your communication with your chosen building and construction professional must be businesslike and consistent with your organisation's policies and procedures. An Evidence Collection template has been provided for you to work into and you must correctly complete all parts of it to be marked as satisfactory for this task. Fire protection project In this task you will inspect an existing building for compliance with passive and active fire protection requirements. You will require access to a Class 1 or 10 building to a maximum of two storeys. You will also require access to the plans and specs for the building. Your assessor will work with you to ensure that you have access to a suitable building. In order to successfully complete the task, you should: identify the NCC and other legislative requirements for passive fire control elements required for the building identify the NCC and other legislative requirements for active fire control elements required for the building determine the level of fire resistance required for the construction of the building check the building for compliance with the criteria identified above. A fire protection project template has been provided for you to work into. Where your workplace has its own inspection checklists/reporting templates and associated documentation, you are welcome to rely on those documents and you should speak to your assessor about how to do this. While direct assessor observation of the building inspection process is not required for this unit, photographic or video evidence should be submitted and guidance about this is provided in the project template. Your supervisor is also required to provide feedback in relation to following organisational policies and procedures and working safely. Guidance is also provided to you in the template. |
