Assignment overview

This assignment is a mandatory submission, which means that in order to pass this subject of study, you must submit this assignment.

This assignment will draw on the VIA Character Signature Strengths Survey (Institute on Character, n.d.) that you completed in 7.4 Activity: Reflection report 2 – Signature strengths. In that activity, you were asked to select one signature strength to use in a new and unique way and to commit to using your signature strength over the course of 7 days. You were asked to brainstorm new and different ways that your selected signature strength could be used, and then to apply this signature strength either at work or at home, during at least five clearly defined times in your weekly schedule.

In this assignment, you are required to write one Fresh Approach to Signature Strengths journal submission for each occasion that you used your signature strength in a new and unique way. You will then critically analyse and reflect upon your experience of using one of your top five signature strengths in new ways.

This assignment is relevant to students for a couple of reasons. Firstly, using your signature strengths in new ways has been shown to enhance wellbeing and build protective factors against stress. Secondly, taking the time to reflect on a proficiency (that is, something you are really good at, e.g. guitar, soccer, video games) can boost self-awareness, self-esteem and future performance.

This assignment supports Subject Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Use of generative artificial intelligence

Ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools is permitted in this assessment task. Any use of content from generative AI tools must be acknowledged. Assignment details

Read through the following steps to understand and meet the requirements of this assignment:

Step 1: Complete the VIA Character Signature Strengths Survey

Complete the VIA Character Signature Strengths Survey (Institute on Character, n.d.). It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete this survey. At the end of the survey, you will receive a summary of your Top Five VIA Character Strengths. Ensure that you keep a record of this page by exporting your results as you will need to refer to this document as you write your reflection report. The option to export your survey results can be found in the 'Explore What's Best In You' section of the results page.

Step 2: Select One Signature Strength that will be your focus for this reflection report and put it to practice over a seven day period

After reading through your survey results, select one particular signature strength that will focus on. Then commit to using this strength in ways that you have previously applied it, to any aspect of your life where it may be beneficial. Aim to spend at least 20 minutes a day practising your signature strength in a new and unique way.

Step 3: Complete 5 entries in your Fresh Approaches to Signature Strengths Journal

You are required to complete 5 entries in your Fresh Approaches to Signature Strengths Journal. In these journal entries, address your experiences in putting your Signature Strength to use. Did you find the experience difficult? Did it have any beneficial outcomes in your life? Aim to answer all the questions in the journal entry template and ensure that you export each entry as these will be submitted as an appendix to your reflection report as proof of completion.

You will also be submitting your complete journal entries through the following submission points:

Assignment 2B: Reflection report 2 - Journal entry 1

Assignment 2B: Reflection report 2 - Journal entry 2

Assignment 2B: Reflection report 2 - Journal entry 3

Assignment 2B: Reflection report 2 - Journal entry 4

Assignment 2B: Reflection report 2 - Journal entry 5

Step 4: Write your Assignment 2B: Reflection report on activities

This reflection report assignment relates to your ability to critically reflect on your experience of using your top signature strengths in new ways, as well as a personal proficiency that might be linked to your strengths. Please answer the following questions:

What does science say about strengths based positive psychology interventions (PPIs)?

What are your top 5 signature strengths, and which strength(s) did you use in new ways during the Fresh Approaches to Signature Strengths task?

a. How have you used these strength(s) before?

b. Why did you focus on those strength(s)?

c. How did you use them?

What was your subjective experience of the task? Was it positive, negative, or neutral? How did your experience compare with the cohort**? Why?

What were the positive and/or negative aspects of completing the task? Can scientific theory or literature help to make sense of your experience?

Can you give a detailed description of a personal proficiency? How does this proficiency positively influence your life?

Does this proficiency link to your strengths, or could you use your strengths in new ways to further boost your proficiency? Is there science that can support this?

In conclusion, what self-developments have occurred as a result of completing this task? Do you intend to deliberately utilise your strengths in the future, and could this help to improve your future subjective wellbeing?

Download Assignment Template for reflection reports (DOCX 36 KB) to familiarise yourself with the expectations for this report. Ensure that your finished report is as close to 1000 words in length as possible. This assignment is a reflection report, so it is important to adhere to the expectations of this writing style. This means the report should be written in full paragraphs and without the use of subheadings or questions.

Note: The reference list is not included in the word count.

** Keep an eye on Announcements, where we will share the average results from the student cohort on the outcome measure tools.

Step 5: Post-assignment Wellbeing survey

Once you have completed these activities, fill out the Post-Assignment Wellbeing survey. The information that you provide will be used to measure the group's wellbeing upon completion of the assignment activity.

Step 6: Submit your reflection report

After proof-reading your assignment and reading through the assignment marking guide to ensure that you have addressed all aspects of the reflection report, ensure that you have attach your Fresh Approaches to Signature Strengths Journal entries to your assignment document as these will be reviewed as proof of completion of the activities. You can do this by copying and pasting your individual journal entries from their exported Word docs to the end of your reflection report.

Follow the instructions in the Submission details overview section to submit your assignment document.
