ARBE2301: Measurement of Building Works 1
Assessment 2: Groundworks (40% weightage)
Due date: 04 May 2025, 11:59 pm
Learning Outcomes
After completion of the Assessment 2, you will achieve the following learning outcomes.
Investigate the process of building measurement
Apply the rules for bills of quantities and ANZSMM
Prepare building measurement and bills of quantities
General Instructions
This assessment aims to assess your knowledge on the importance of preparing bills of quantities (BoQ) using standard methods of measurements (ANZSMM), modern methods of construction and the services provided by quantity surveyors. Also, it evaluates your skills in building measurements focusing on the Groundworks section.
The assessment has two tasks:
Taking-off quantities for the Groundworks section using the given drawings and
Writing a brief personal reflection about your experience on the building measurement process
The following documents are required to complete Assessment 2, and they are provided in the Assignment 2 folder in Canvas.
Architectural drawings
Structural Drawings
Spot level details
Measurement sheet template
Query sheet template
Additional information sheet
Assessment Tasks
Task 1: Taking-off quantities of the Groundworks section
You are assigned to take-off quantities for Groundworks for the Multi Arts Pavilion (MAP) project. You need to provide the necessary calculations for Groundworks using the given measurement sheet template in accordance with ANZSMM. All necessary drawings are provided in the Assignments section of Canvas (See Assignment 2 folder). Only the Groundworks section must be measured for Assessment 2. Make sensible assumptions where necessary and clearly mention them in a query sheet.
Calculation sheets for all relevant items must be provided. All workings must be shown. Submissions that do not provide all the workings will be at the risk of not passing. All workings should be legible and presented in a professional manner.
Task 2: Personalised reflection write-up
Once you complete the measurements, you need to write and submit an individual reflection of maximum one page. This should include content about your learning throughout the measurement process, how you feel about this systematic process, the positives and negatives along with your perspective about a career in quantity surveying. It is recommended that you note down your ideas from the beginning of the semester to develop a one-page reflective write-up for this task.
Assessment Guidelines
You must meet the required standard of academic integrity (including an acceptable Turnitin rating and Generative AI scores).
In line with the University of Newcastle policy and procedures, the acceptable use of Generative AI is “Somewhat permitted”. Link: https://www.newcastle.edu.au/current- students/study-essentials/assessment-and-exams/assessments-and- assignments/artificial-intelligence-in-assessment
You may use Generative AI for preliminary research and brainstorming only. Drafting, writing, structuring and editing the assessment report using Generative AI is not permitted.
Submission Requirements
The submission must include:
A single PDF named: “Student’s last name_Student number.pdf (e.g., Smith_123456.pdf”).
The single PDF must include the following:
The query sheet and measurement sheets including the calculations of the Groundworks section presented upright in portrait orientation (Task 1)
The personalised reflection (Task 2)
The correctly named PDF file must be submitted via the Assignment 2 folder on Canvas, and this is the responsibility of the student. Unreadable files cannot be marked, and zero marks will be awarded (the ability for multiple file uploads will be provided on Canvas to enable students to ensure files are readable).
Emailed submissions will NOT BE ACCEPTED. This submission is due on 04 May 2025, 11:59 pm.
Late Submissions
The mark for an assessment item submitted after the designated time on the due date, without an approved extension of time, will be reduced by 10% of the possible maximum mark for that assessment item for each day or part day that the assessment item is late.
Note: this applies equally to week and weekend days.
